The Election of Lincoln
November of 1860
Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth president of the United States. He campaigned as anti-slave and big government, everything the southern states hated. Lincoln won no southern states during the election. So how did he win? The majority of the population lived in the north, and he won the popular vote by a long shot. In November of 1860, the decision was made that Abraham Lincoln would become our sixteenth presdient of the United States.
This election was one of the most important factors leading to the Civil War, because this is the time that everything started crumbling down. The southern states started seceeding from the U.S. one by one. Each side was angry, and this is what really started the Civil War.

The Emancipation Proclamation.
To the left is the picture of the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a document signed by Lincoln when he was president. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1st of 1863, three years after the Civil War had started. The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves should be let free. Now, it didn't completely get rid of slavery, but it helped a great deal.
